DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z June 5th, 2025

SMOKE:
Canada/Central and Eastern United States/Atlantic Ocean/Gulf of
America/Western Europe...
Wildfire activity remained extensive across western and central
Canada, with numerous large fires observed in northeastern British
Columbia, northern Alberta, far southern Northwest Territories,
central Saskatchewan, much of Manitoba, and western Ontario. Moderate
density smoke from these sources blanketed across most of Canada,
while also drifting south over the central and eastern CONUS and into
the Atlantic Ocean. Lighter density smoke blanketed most of Canada, with
smoke extending north through the Northwestern Territories and Nunavut,
south into the Northern United States, and far west across the northern
Atlantic before settling over western Europe. Due to scattered cloud
cover, heavy density smoke was mainly observeable over in northeastern
British Columbia as well as central Canada, where the smoke extended
from central Saskatchewan through central-southern Manitoba, central
Ontario and western Quebec.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Central-Southern Mexico/Gulf of America...
An area of light density smoke and aerosols, attributed to widespread
seasonal fire activity, volcanic emissions, and industrial sources
throughout central and southern Mexico, was observed extending over
central-southern Mexico and the Gulf of America.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
