DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2350Z June 5th, 2025

SMOKE:
Canada / Central and Eastern United States / Atlantic Ocean / Gulf
of America
Widespread wildfire activity persisted across central and western
Canada, with active fires concentrated in the northeastern British
Columbia, northern Alberta, the southern Northwest Territories, central
Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and western Ontario. Areas of heavy smoke were
clearly observed across portions of central Saskatchewan, central-southern
Manitoba, western Ontario, and extending eastward into Southern Quebec.

A large plume of moderate-to-heavy density smoke expanded through central
and eastern Canada, flowing southeastward into the northern U.S., Ohio
Valley, and mid-Atlantic states. Light to moderate smoke continued to
drift over much of the eastern U.S. and the western Atlantic Ocean, with
curling behavior along the East Coast suggesting ongoing east-northeast
advection. Additional branches of the smoke plume extended southwestward
into the central Plains and southern U.S, overlapping with lighter
regional emissions.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Central-Southern Mexico/Gulf of America...
An area of light density smoke and aerosols, attributed to widespread
seasonal fire activity, volcanic emissions, and industrial sources
throughout central and southern Mexico, was observed extending over
central-southern Mexico and the Gulf of America.

Dust:
A light amount of Saharan Dust was seen traveling westward across the
Atlantic Ocean towards the Lesser Antilles with a lighter amount of
Saharan Dust seen over the eastern Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
